Mattias Eklundh: Creating something out of nothing!

The tall smart long-haired Swedish genius I met on the grounds of Guitare en Scene Festival in France is the man who invented his ‘Freak guitar” style being absolutely hilarious and free with the instrument he loves. His name is Mattias Ia Eklundh, the chief cook behind the tasty music unit named Freak Kitchen. We are in late July of 2013, in the calm little place in France that is brought to life annually with the guitar aficionados festival. Mattias has just finished a 3-hour clinic on Indian rhythms and uncommon musical timing,  a very mind opening piece of inspiration and theory that was equally very insightful and completely entertaining!

Mattias IA Eklundh at GES

At first I wanted to talk to you about the clinic you just did. What are your impressions?

Oh, the students were great! They were brave to show up and even braver to stay. I mostly went into Indian rhythms and stuff like that, clapping and transforming it into actual guitar playing. The thing is I never do what I’ve planned, I’m just doing what I’m interested in. In that sense, sometimes the participants suffer in a way. They come thinking like I wanna learn shredding or I wanna know how to do this and that, but I say: not now! Because I think there is stuff more important than that. But they fought a good fight, I think. They were really trying to get into this system. And that’s what it’s all about: to give some inspiration and encourage them to grow their own mustache, as I like to say. To give them some positive attitude and show that you can live in this strange business now and do your own thing. I’ve done my own thing for quite some time now, so I can share something.

I guess that’s the best approach to teaching: when you share what you are most interested in at the moment…

Absolutely! Because otherwise you have to write some stuff down and I never write anything down saying like: show some picking here, some shred there, different techniques. It’s not funny! You, pretty much, have to  show yourself and what you are interested in. And if you have an interesting self to show, the students stay with you and stay alert to what you are saying. Besides humour is a powerful weapon too. I say stupid things once in a while. I’m dead serious in what I intend to show them, but humour is a good way to get your message through, to bring them in and give them a big hug!

Mattias IA Eklundh at GES

In creating music humour is also essential..

Yeah, many people don’t think so, but I do! I am from the Frank Zappa generation and he was asked once: does humour belong to music? Well, of course, it does, it belongs to life. Humor is a good way to frame life and to make it understandable, laugh at it, because it’s hard! Really, it’s a nasty planet in many ways, we live here for a long time and then we die. But humor helps to have a good time while you are here, ’cause what the fuck! I’m a middle-aged man, I have some good years left for me, but then, hey, I’m actually gonna die! What can I do about it?

Have fun!…

Yeah, have fun and do your thing! That’s what it’s all about! Don’t worry about tomorrow that much, it’s really in the now! Live in the now! Anything else is irrelevant.

Mattias IA Eklundh at GES

And your music is very much about living in the now and exploring the utmost of the moment with your guitar… Continue reading

The interview in Russian was published in Inrock #62, 2013 and can also be found here – http://www.inrock.ru/interviews/chris_spedding_2013

Chris Spedding

Chris Spedding

Он играл с Полом Маккартни и снимался с ним и его женой Линдой в кино (в фильме “Give My Regards To The Broad Street”).

Chris Spedding-Monstre Jam

Continue reading

Beth Hart: With a smallest light, the dark flees

After the release of numerous solo albums and recently two very successful disks of classic blues covers, huge amount of concerts in all corners of Europe, it’s hard to believe, but Beth Hart first visit to Russia was only last year, July 2013! When I talked to her a year before that at Guitare en Scene festival in France, she already told me, they would love to come and play in our country, but it’s not easy to arrange.

Now I’m just so happy it became true. This midsummer hot day Beth Hart is doing a double bill gig with the huge blues star – Taj Mahal. But even more, on April 3, 2014 Beth Hart is coming again!

Beth Hart in Moscow 2013

We are sitting in Beth´s dressing room, talking while Beth is doing her stage make-up. Her husband Scott enters the room, bringing her some food. She instantly smiles full of light giving him a setlist for the show.

Beth: – Hey, Scotty, do you think it’s ok to come out and do some acoustic songs before playing electric with the whole band? I’ve thought that would be nice to open up. And only have a few songs acoustic here: «Under Water», «Delicious», «Baby I Love You», «Chocolate Jesus». And then I bring the band out. What do you think?
Scott: Great! I think that’s absolutely perfect. (He stands up and leaves the room with a setlist)
Beth: Yeah, really?!? I love you!!! ….(She sighs lightly, turns to me, her voice becomes much lower and stronger)… Ok. I’m ready now

It’s so wonderful that you are here in Moscow! What are your first impressions of what surrounds you?
Oh, what I’ve seen so far has not been a lot, but it’s been really nice for me. I went to a “12-step AA programme” yesterday at the church. It was an english-speaking meeting, but there were people that were born and raised in Russia. They were really kind! In all the places where we’ve gone to eat so far, the food has been really spectacular. And of course, the architecture is fantastic and unique! But when my husband took me to Red Square last night and I started to walk through, I couldn’t believe how spiritual it was! It’s moving to see what human beings can do, what they can make, what they can build! I’m looking at that, with all the evening lights and the buildings around, and I’m just going aaargh!

Oh, yes. It’s really a special place that has its own vibe. I saw a pic of you on The Red Square in you twitter yesterday and noticed how happy you look!
Oh, yeah!?! It’s really awesome!

And how do you find the people?
Oh, I find the people to be really strong people. Proud people. Probably, because this country has been here for so long and has so incredible history, so of course, the people would be proud and strong people from the old country. It’s kind of what I thought it might be, but even better. So I’ve been really looking forward to this. I’ve never thought I would get to come to Russia. And I remember that at the early 90s, when the artists from the US started coming from here, I thought: oh, you have to be a big star to go there, so I’ll never make it there. And then for this to happen this year, it’s been really surprising! I’m really happy to be here!

Oh, and I must say, you have fans here and we’ve been waiting for you to come here for quite some time!
Oh, really! Unbelievable! How’s that possible!? Wow!

Interview: Beth Hart – Peace Within Myself

It’s been almost 2 years since my first interview with Beth. At that time I went to Europe and she was on my “must-see” list for Guitare en Scene festival in France. We instantly connected and talked openly about many things. I can admit, I am  impressed by the power of Beth’s character and by the beauty of her soul. So this interview still looks relevant and very important…Don’t miss Beth on April 3th at GlavClub in Moscow!

This interview was originally published in №56 (6, 2012) InRock music magazine (Russia) and can be also found here http://www.inrock.ru/english/interviews/beth_hart_2012 Please, be so kind to quote with credits 🙂

Beth Hart at Guitare en SceneBeth Hart at Guitare en SceneBeth Hart at Guitare en SceneBeth Hart at Guitare en SceneBeth Hart at Guitare en Scene
…we had a chance to meet Beth in person at “Guitare en Scene” festival in France. Beth, as emotional and charming in real life as in her music, open and frank, almost ready to hug you for a good question, talked to us about her life and her beautiful music.

Beth cares to establish deep understanding with her audience, and isn’t it something that deep that every true artist strives for?! And we must say she truly succeeded in in this. Her previous album “Don’t Explain”, a gorgeous selection of covers for soul & blues classics, recorded together with well-known guitarist Joe Bonamassa, achieved all possible awards and won critics’ applause. Beth’s new CD “Bang Bang Boom Boom” out in October. We are more than sure it should repeat the success of the previous one. Besides this time it’s not covers, but all-original material written by Beth. We talked to Beth about how “Don’t Explain” has changed her, about the energy and inspiration beneath the new record, about who and what supports her every waking hour, and surely, why blues is the best cure for love. Meet one and only – Beth Hart.

To see your set live was one of my special goals for Guitare en Scene festival, along with ZZ Top. And I really hope there would soon be the day when you come to Russia. That would be really cool, if you come together with Joe Bonamassa or on your solo tour!
Oh, thank you! Thank you! Oh, yes, I hope so too! And I think that this or next year it will happen. I’d been hearing from my label, that we might come in the next 6 months or smth like that. And that would be really amazing, because I’ve never been to Russia.
